EU Could Compel Carriers to Support VoIP

Wednesday, April 15, 2009
The European Union is considering legislature that would force wireless network operators to support VoIP on their networks. Currently, individual countries oversee such legislature.

European carriers view the technology as a threat to their business model and have widely banned VoIP from being used on their networks, but if it is enacted by the EU, then all operators hosting wireless services in EU member states would be forced to comply.

VoIP is a technology for making telephone calls over the Internet by compressing voice and transform its data in separate packets over the IP, It is almost as seamless as a regular telephone call. It is also much cheaper, but requires 3G (or more) network coverage or an access to a nearby Wi-Fi network with a broadband Internet connection.
