project "Ara" from Motorolla

Wednesday, October 30, 2013

The Official Motorola Blog had announced new Motorola project called Ara, the new project is an effort to develop “free, open hardware platform for creating highly modular smartphones.”, where the consumer have the ability to decide exactly what their phone can do, what it looks like and what it costs.

The phone hardware will be made up of an endoskeleton and separate modules; the costumer will start with the endoskeleton and then choose deferent separate modules as desire, like the processor, screen, keyboard…etc.

This new concept will be useful in case of malfunction of one of the mobile component, user will not be required to change the device, instead this particular component will easily be replaced, and also user will easily upgrade one or more of the device’s parts to new ones that have for example new feature that wasn’t available when he first purchased the device.

Motorola will continue to work on this project with Phonebloks community, which started this project a couple months ago.
