The difference between 32-bit and 64-bit processors

After Apple releases the iPhone 5S, and the announcement about its willingness to produce 64-bit processors for Android smartphones, as mentioned in previous news in our site, many questions had recently been asked about the difference between 32-bit and 64-bit processors.

It is important to mention at first that these differences are similar to those found in personal computers and laptops that run by using one of the two types of processors (32 or 64 bit).

The most important differences that distinguish processors 64-bit on processors 32-bit is the number of lines linked to memory that allows to process a larger amount of information, so the device gets higher performance and greater tasks faster than the 32-bit processor. In addition, 64-bit processor’s devices can accept a random access memory (RAM) bigger than that accepted in 32-bit processor’s devices, this must speed up the performance of the device, so that the processor finds the information in the memory RAM and the need to go through the internal memory, which needs more time to be done, is reduced, this means less time and better performance.

As for the impact of 64-bit processors on graphic, it will improve the performance of the display, such as image processing and camera applications and games, and will add larger sizes of random access memory (RAM) to get a better view with less effort.

All of the above will affect directly on the power consumption issue and the smartphone’s work time on battery, so designers must be attention to this issue because this problem concerns all users with different requirements and needs.

This is very similar to the difference between the four-cylinder car and an eight-cylinder car, the first one consumes little fuel but the difference will be noticed in performance with those eight cylinders but the second one is a crazy fuel consumer.

It should be noted that all these differences will not appear while using the device in the normal or simple jobs, but the difference will be shown when running huge applications especially games which mainly need memory and a powerful processor.
