Dubai Police may use Google Glass

Monday, May 26, 2014

The wearable technology, compatible with both Android and iOS platforms, comes with a display that mirrors the effect of a 63.5cm HD screen placed 2.4 metres from the user, and features a 5MP camera.

Dubai Police Smart Services Department is currently reviewing the newly released technology for use by traffic police. The department's general director, Colonel Khalid Nasser Al Razooqi, told UAE daily Gulf News that his team has created two apps in-house for traffic officers.

"One will allow them to take photos of traffic violations from the Glass, which will go instantly into our system, and the other application helps identify wanted cars," he explained.

To take photos using Glass, the user only needs to tap the side of the device and the photo, including location and date-time data, is sent to Dubai Police servers.

The second app requires only a look at number plates to enact a search of a wanted vehicles database, which will return an alert message if there is a match on the viewed licence plate.

"We at Dubai Police always try to adopt what is new in the market and we like to stay up to date," Al Razooqi said.
