Huawei Mate S is official with pressure-sensitive screen and a stylish metal body

Sunday, September 06, 2015

Huawei has something pretty exciting in store to fill the screen gap between its 5.2-inchers like the flagship P8 or the midrange Honor 7, and its huge 6"+ P8max. The newly-announced Mate S carries the torch from its Mate7 predecessor in terms of a high-end metal design, but it also can be considered a brand new handset category from Huawei, since it has a smaller, 5.5" screen, with the fresh Force Touch technology in select markets. The pressure-sensitive screen means that the panel distinguishes between a light tap or a harder press, and reacts accordingly.

The Mate S also sports a very good screen-to-body ratio, and a 2.5D AMOLED screen panel, waterfalling seamlessly to the sides, where the Mate S is just 2.6mm thin. The display is with a 1080p resolution, and the phablet is powered by Huawei's newest Kirin 935 chipset, coupled with 3 GB of RAM.

A 13 MP camera in the back with OIS and dual LED flash, an 8 MP selfie shooter with front LED flash, and a much improved fingerprint reader round up the pretty offering. The camera has a full manual mode with ISO adjustments, exposure compensation, exposure time, white balance and focusing, as well as things like grid adjustments, and flash-assisted focusing.

It's the little things that matter, too, as we get three built-in directional microphones to enable a clear recording with minimal background noise. There are also different recording regimes, such as interview mode (180° recording), meeting mode (all-direction recording), and a regular mode. There are also two stereo speakers at the bottom, though we have to hear them to believe the bi-directional sound, as the distance between the two seems pretty small.

The Mate S will be available in more than 30 countries starting September 15, including China, France, Germany, Israel, Japan, Spain, South Africa and UAE. It will be up on pre-order in Europe on Vmall.eu starting Tuesday, with the 32GB version in titanium grey or mystique champagne at 649 euros, while the version with 64GB of ROM will come in "prestige" gold or coral pink, with a 699 euros tag.
