Stretchable wire

Tuesday, December 25, 2012

Researchers at North Carolina State University developed wires that can stretch up to eight times their original length; the material of the wire will be a liquid metal alloy of gallium and indium, an efficient conductor of electricity.

One of the researchers said: "Our approach keeps the materials separate, so you have maximum conductivity without impairing elasticity.”

Of course a number of issues are still facing the researchers before releasing it to the public, the biggest of which is minimizing leakage if the wires are severed.

But the product had a very broad range of use you can think of, some of which is to be used headphones and cellphone chargers, so no more “the charger wire won’t reach” problem in the near future.
